Abstract

Without effective responses to COVID-19, the French government had to close schools on February 20, 2020 with potential repercussions on the psychological health of parents. The objective here is to identify the psychological factors of perceived well-being among parents of French students in this period. 144 parents were questioned via an online questionnaire about their socio-demographic data, their relationship to the virus and their social interactions, their stress, loneliness and perceived well-being. An explanatory model of parental well-being during this period is constructed from multivariate analyses: participants who reported the lowest levels of well-being were younger or reported higher levels of loneliness and stress. These loneliness and stress scores, in turn, could also be inferred from the participant's gender, their requirement to work outdoors, and the frequency of their interactions before confinement. These insights are usable by policy makers and clinicians to successfully navigate potential future crises and support future decisions. They show the need to consider the mental health of parents and therefore of their children in these future decisions.
