Abstract

This article looks back at an international project conducted jointly by a research team, a team of archivists and Burkina Faso’s oldest teachers’ union (SNEA-B). As the paper maps collaboration forged since 2021 around the conservation of this union’s archives, it calls for reflecting on the challenges associated to African struggles’ archival processes, related tensions and the gender of activist archives. Taking stock of the project, the article shows that interest in archives and history writing are not the sole preserve of researchers and archivists. Reappropriating one’s history as a participant in social movements is a key issue in Burkina Faso, as activist activities are largely put on standby.
