Abstract

This article analyses a recurring warning to the deceased about a lake to be careful with in the Pyramid Texts. After contextualising various occurrences of this statement within the corpus, its implicit meaning and the ritual context in which it originated will be explored. To do so, it will be useful to step outside the pyramid to examine what the inscriptions and scenes in certain non-royal tombs reveal about the rite of crossing the lake, which in many respects seems to belong to the same conceptual horizon as the warning about the lake, but from a different perspective.
