Abstract

This article examines metacommunication in the context of AI companionship and argues that it represents a compelling field of inquiry for cultural linguistics, as it reshapes fundamental aspects of human sociality. AI not only influences but actively transforms communication cultures. To explore how language-generating AI affects these cultures, attention can be directed to the practice of “talking about talking” with such systems. This process entails multiple forms of alignment: towards language-generating AI, in interaction with it, and in relation to different social groups.
