Challenging the belief that cells favor rigid environments, we find that certain protein combinations make soft surfaces as appealing as hard. Since the tissues inside our body are much softer than the glass or plastic used in research, it is important to better model the cells’ natural environment outside of the body for a higher fidelity view of how they function and how diseases develop.
