Abstract

Our contribution is intended to contribute to one of the topics discussed at the workshop “Plural approaches to interculturality in education: What perspectives for thinking about citizenship education?” to the needs of teacher training in France in the field of interculturality. To this end, we will examine the place of interculturality in official language teaching and in the initial training of primary school teachers. We then test a system of initial training in plurilingualism and interculturality given to students in the first year of the Master's Degree in the Didactics of Modern Foreign Languages (Métiers de l'enseignement, de l'éducation et de la formation [MEEF]). A case study of two female teachers at the beginning of their careers is used to examine the extent to which this system can contribute to developing intercultural professional skills. An analysis of the language biographies of these teachers and their professional memoirs reveals the development of intercultural professional skills. These findings suggest the potential of plurilingualism in interculturality.
